Supported file types and size limits
- File type. Your cover must exist a single PDF file that includes the back cover, spine, and front cover as ane image.
- File size. Cover files larger than 650MB won't convert. We recommend a file size of 40MB or less because large files tin can tiresome downwards press.
Setting your encompass size
Your cover needs to be sized with bleed in order to run across our quality standards. Bleed is a press term that refers to when printed items on a page, such as images or backgrounds, attain all the mode to the edge of the page. To size your comprehend file with bleed, add 0.125" (3.ii mm) to the pinnacle, lesser, and outside edges of your comprehend.
Our templates brand it easier to create a print-ready paperback embrace with programs that can open a PNG or PDF file and save a PDF file.
If you want to fix up your file yourself, endeavour our cover figurer and template generator. After you enter your ink and paper choices, trim size, and folio count, the estimator volition generate a layout like this:
- Full encompass. Full width and height of the encompass file, including front, back, spine, and wrap.
- Front cover. Width and height of the visible embrace area afterwards it'due south printed. Information technology's the aforementioned for the back encompass likewise.
- Safe expanse. Identify all text and images within this area, so they don't shift to the front end or dorsum embrace during printing.
- Drain. Setting you bleed properly ensures printed objects reach all the fashion to the edge of the folio. Bookkeeping for drain is important, because it prevents a white border from actualization at the edge of the page when the book is trimmed.
- Margin. Don't identify text or images in this area, unless they're intended to wrap to the inside embrace.
- Spine. The outside edge of the book where the pages are gathered and bound. Your book must take a minimum folio count of 79 pages to include text on the spine.
- Spine prophylactic expanse. Place all spine text and images within this area, and then they don't shift to the front or back cover during printing.
- Spine margin. Don't place text or images in this spine surface area because they could shift to the forepart or back cover during printing.
- Barcode margin. This area ensures that the barcode doesn't shift during printing and scans properly.
Note: For Right to Left content, the encompass reckoner and template generator will generate a layout with the front encompass placed to the left of the spine and the back cover to the right of the spine. The barcode volition be placed at the lower left-hand corner of your book's back comprehend.
Finding your spine measurement
To format your paperback cover, you'll first need to calculate the spine measurements.
Insert the spine measurements, selected trim size width and superlative, and the 0.125" (three.ii mm) drain requirement into the post-obit equations to find your embrace size:
- Encompass Width = Bleed + Back Cover Width + Spine Width + Front Cover Width + Bleed
- Comprehend Height = Bleed + Trim Tiptop + Bleed
Spine measurements for black and white books
- White paper: folio count x 0.002252" (0.0572 mm)
- Foam paper: page count 10 0.0025" (0.0635 mm)
Spine measurements for color books
- Color paper: page count x 0.002347" (0.0596 mm)
Spine text
We only print spine text on books with more than 79 pages. Text on larger spines must exist sized to fit the spine, with at least 0.0625" (one.six mm) of space between the text and the edge of the spine. Every book varies slightly when bound. Allow for 0.0625" (1.six mm) variance on either side of the fold lines for your encompass.
Formatting your cover background
- Bleed. All covers have bleed. If you lot want to add together a background (e.k. color or image), brand sure it extends 0.125" (3.two mm) beyond the final trim line on all outside edges. All books are trimmed to size, and to ensure that the background fills the folio, it needs to extend 0.125" (3.two mm) by where the book will be trimmed on the top, bottom, and outside edges. This will forbid a white border from actualization at the edge when your volume is trimmed.
- Illegible text. When choosing a background, consider how much it contrasts with the text. If the colors are too similar, the text might blend into the groundwork and exist hard to read.
- Borders. We don't recommend borders because we must allow for a 0.125" (3.ii mm) production variance that may trim the border or crusade it to appear uneven. If your file includes borders, they should cover at to the lowest degree 0.25" (6.4 mm) inside the trim line. If y'all include a white border, it must run across our minimum border width or we may reject your file.
Shifting of the spine up to 0.0125" (3.2mm) in either direction is within acceptable print variance. If the shift is greater, the copy is considered defective. We don't recommend hard edges on the spine due to the known 0.0125" (3.2mm) shift variance, as difficult edges make this shift more apparent.
Adding images
- Bleed. When adding images, make sure they extend 0.125" (3.2 mm) beyond the last trim line on all edges. This will prevent a white border from appearing at the edge when your volume is trimmed.
- Image colour, size, and quality. Images should be in CMYK color to ensure your encompass looks good in print. All images should exist sized at 100%, flattened to ane layer, and placed in your certificate at a minimum resolution of 300 DPI (dots per inch). Learn more nearly loftier-resolution images.
Adding text
- Front and back encompass text. When adding text, make sure it'south at least 0.125" (3.2 mm) inside the trim lines. Also, no front or dorsum cover text should extend into the spine expanse.
- Spine text. Your book must have at to the lowest degree 79 pages to add spine text. If your volume has fewer than 79 pages, don't add spine text. Also, spine text needs at to the lowest degree 0.0625" (1.6 mm) on either side and then the text doesn't wrap onto the forepart or dorsum cover.
- Book details. Every bit you add together text to your cover, make sure information technology exactly matches the volume details (east.k., title, author name, edition, ISBN) entered during championship setup.
- Font size and color. Text should be at least 7-point font so it'southward large enough for customers to read. Also, make sure the text doesn't blend into the background. This may happen if the text and groundwork colors are too similar.
Barcode size and placement
You can upload a cover with or without a barcode. If y'all cull non to provide your own barcode, nosotros'll automatically place one on your dorsum cover. Larn more nearly barcodes.
Colour requirements
- Color profiles. Color management added to an paradigm or file. We don't recommend including color profiles in your file. Color profiles tin produce unexpected results. They are automatically removed earlier publishing.
- Spot colors. Colour generated from ink chosen from a colour organization (such as Pantone Matching Arrangement). Spot colors are used in starting time press and aren't compatible with KDP's print-on-demand model, then please don't include spot colors in your files. We recommend converting spot colors to CMYK.
- Color spaces. Describes color numerically, such equally RGB (digital cameras and figurer monitors), CMYK (total-colour press), and grayscale (black and white press). Nosotros don't recommend using multiple color spaces in a file because it tin can cause colour variance and unexpected results when your volume is printed.
- Color Variance. With our print on demand model, nosotros have adequate levels of color tolerance. About color variance happens every bit a result of environmental and mechanical factors. We always strive for the best quality when printing your championship. Color variance occurs for many reasons that are non related to your file, even so, taking all the steps you can to perfect your file will reduce the chances of it occurring.
Pre-publication checklist
Before y'all upload your file to KDP, make sure you lot:
- Relieve as a PDF. Your encompass must be a unmarried PDF that includes the dorsum encompass, spine, and front encompass as one image.
- Flatten all transparencies. These tin cause the file to print with missing or distorted content. Consult your software's documentation to learn how.
- Embed your fonts. Consult your software's documentation to learn how.
- Remove crop marks, color bars, template text. Crop marks are lines showing where pages should be trimmed. Color bars are strips with a serial of patches used to ensure color balance during press. Also, remove any template text, PDF cosmos guides, or software references.
- Ensure your cover image meets the minimum resolution of 300 DPI (dots per inch).
- Optimize PDFs. Optimization is useful to reduce your file size, allowing for higher performance when transferring, uploading, viewing, and printing the files.
